Wail from the coffin

Wail from the coffin

Memories fade the edges of pictures imprinted on our minds.
They blur the images and make them fuzzy and smudged,
Unclear, unfocussed, grainy, our thoughts become.
Recalling past events invokes an unidentifiable ache,
where once the heart used to beat.
Recollecting old memories, damages the soul.

A place where once you were happy, no longer exists.
It’s vanished, wiped clean of its existence.
Destroyed and damaged beyond recognition.
There is no turning back, its all gone.
Disappeared, washed away by the tides of,
unfeeling time and deliberate neglect.

All traces of fond times and happy places,
erased from the unsuspecting past.
It was a gradual decomposition, chip by chip,
each monument was broken down, inch by inch,
torturously, crushed slowly, blow by blow.

The degradation was swift but excruciatingly slow.
The slate was wiped clean, of its emotions,
and feelings, stripped of its treasures.
The path to the past’s door was barricaded with,
Padlocks of the present, gates slammed shut,
like the closing of the coffin lid.

Pitch black, suffocating, claustrophobic,
My living space has become.
Gasping for breath, clawing at the velvet-lined lid,
I scream wordlessly, panic sets in.
All I can hear is the sound of my voice,
Shrieking and calling your name.

You walked away after hammering the last nail,
in the coffin, unconcerned of my heart’s decay.
Oblivious to,
my soul’s rotting,
my life seeping out,
of my abandoned and listless body.
My outstretched hand, imploring eyes.
My heartrending wails, my strangled cries.
My unfulfilled desires, my unspoken sighs.
My final words to you,
had you stopped to listen, were,

“Darling, I’ll always love you.”

You are a broken angel Sulekkha. Here, in these words, you’ve painted a perfect picture of pathos.

Next, I hope you'll write a fond memory of your beloved dad’s kindness. Show us what he’s like…

I could just feel that coffin lid being shut and me gasping for air. When love is gone this is exactly how you feel and you expressed it beautifully, the loneliness, the devastated heart, the suffocating feeling. Dark and graphically very well expressed poem. Loved it Outlier.

there are moments when it feels like that but does death or dying have to be this dark?

I felt every word you wrote in your poem Sulekha. It was more of a wake up call for me, am I or have I allowed myself to die like that after a broken heart?

I do recall how I've been so affected ~ devastated by the loss.
But love is life giving and if I love forever, then it has to be a promise to continue living not dying.

It's pretty heavy and intense but I am grateful that I have mirrored myself into it ;)

Oh so beautiful and true and heart wrenching. The truth to all of it, at the total loss of what once was precious; and the bitterness to this truth, brought tears to my eyes

Awesome poem :)

sulekkha said...

@Melissa, Thank you for reflecting on my poem. Love never dies and those who love live on forever, with or without their loved ones. Pain is the antiseptic lotion on the hurt. It heals with time.

WOW you certainly painted a picture full of emotions with your words with this one. My life philosophy has seen me move on from the break down of my relationship, don't look back look forward

sulekkha said...

@Larry, Looking back only slows you down and brings negativity in life. But sometimes the past revives you, keeps you sane. thanks for your comment.
